Edible. This morel differs from the common morel, morchella esculenta, in that it has a rounded, elongated black/brownish cap 2 to 5 cm high; which has flat fleshy pleats which run lengthwise, and pleat-like vertical folds which surround deep elongated fields. In appearance this morel can have the following variations: a) with a strongly pointed light coloured cap, b) with a round and blackish coloured cap, the rim of which stands away from the stem. The pointed morel grows in domestic gardens and in meadows in the spring. It is much rarer in the fall.
Pg. 92 "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada". Suspicious (poisonous) Fruitbodies have a radius of 2 to 7 cm they are rotund to ellipsoid. Often with a short stem. The colour on the outside is brown/yellow, whitish yellow or reddish yellow. The surface shows small fissures and is often speckled and covered in scales. Under the surface the skin is white thick, first yellow fleshed later similar to thick leather. The inside is at first whitish but will soon turn blue/gray/black and later appear dusty. It grows in summer in mountainous areas in woods. If you consume the flesh without first blanching it it will taste sharp and be harmful. But even when properly prepared it does not taste good. And it is not to be confused with a real truffle.
Edible. See Pg. 174 (Boletes) "Mushrooms of Ontario". Caps are globelike, or flat round, brown/yellowish with a slimy easily removed skin on top. Spores are attached, yellow. Stem is finger high and thick, it is stiff full and the upper portion is punctuated with small dots. The flesh is unchangeable yellow, juicy and has a pleasant fruity taste. Grows plentifully in summer in rich wooded areas and grassy places. It is easy prey - just like the cow mushroom - for maggots.
Edible. The stalk is short with numerous branches, breakable not hollow. Branches and smaller arms thickened, with individually different appearance, a bit wrinkly with coxcomb like points. The whole fungus is ashgray. Often in August, September in woods. It can be eaten but it is bitter.
Edible Cap up to 6 cm wide, often flattened out, blueish white or greenish, sometimes yellow brown. Gills downwards turning, white or greenish. Stalk like the cap or even a bit lighter. Flesh coloured like the top of the cap. Smells like anise. In wooded areas not rare.
Edible. See Pg. 271 "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada". Cap and stem waxy yellow, shiny, Cap convex to flat, often finely striped, dry 2 - 3 cm across. Gills running downwards, broad almost triangular shape, yellow. Stalk 2 - 3 cm high, hollow, uneven in strength, often bent or pinched together. Colour is the same as the hat, paler near the bottom. Meat is yellow/white Smells faintly sweet Can be found in autumn on meadows and shallows.
Rounded, black-brown with large multifaceted, pyramid like warts. The inside is whitish, marbled with short brownish and white veins. Spores are large, rounded, elliptical, light brown. Found in chalky clay soil across Germany. October until winter.
Inedible. Taste: unpleasantly bitter. Cap: rounded, thick, dry, thinning towards the outer edge, rolled inwards; olive gray, brown or pale yellow up to 0.007 wide. Tubes lemon yellow with yellow/green edges. Stem yellow often with reddish dots near the bottom, near the ground spreading root like, hairy, lemon yellow. Flesh is whitish, soft, when broken it quickly turns dark blue. Fall, in beech and oak woods.
Poisonous. See Pg. 225 "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada". Cap conical to bell shaped becoming flat. Up to 2cm wide, white, also lilac coloured, brownish brick red or yellow. Flesh is white, gills are attached, first white, later earth coloured. Stem up to 5cm tall, white, dusty. Late summer to fall in woods.
See Pg. 224 "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada" Cap is convex at a young stage, after flat up to 8 cm wide, slimy, first whitish or chamois yellow. on the side …… (illegible) free, gills are attached close, pale white or cinnamon brown, sweating droplets. Stem: solid, then hollow, whitish. If the fungus is cut lengthwise from cap to stem a piece of the cap will be visible, hanging down in the hollow part of the stem. The smell is disgusting. Grows in woods everywhere.
