Frans vanGerwen was a founding member of the MST in 1973, and was a member for many years afterward. Frans served on the MST's board of directors as program director and newsletter editor in 1975-76 and 1980-81, and was president of the MST from June 1980 to March 1982. The Royal Ontario Museum featured an exhibition of his work titled Bemushroomed in March and April of 1976.
Frans was also the designer of the MST's logo, winning against 26 other submissions in a 1981 contest. The design was based on his photograph of Hypsizygus ulmarius (Pleurotus ulmarius). See Mycelium vol. 7 no. 4, page 11 for details.
Frans donated some of his original works to the MST in December of 2019 as photographic transparencies in a mixture of 35mm, 6x7, 4x5 and 11x14 formats, and related documents. Digital conversion of the donation was completed in March of 2020.
