Fungal Flora of Carden Plain - Interim Report. June 2005

Members of the Mycological Society of Toronto are undertaking a mycological inventory of the Carden Plain, focussing on the Cameron and the Windmill Ranches. Both include extensive areas of alvar and alvar pavement, alvar grasslands, open shrub communities (alvar shrub savannah), forest, and marshlands. Fungi in alvar communities have not been studied in detail, and this inventory is intended to provide an initial list of species found in alvar communities.

During 2005, we propose to undertake two three day excursions to the ranches to initiate the inventory. The proposed dates are in June and September 2005. Additional day excursions will also be undertaken.

The first part of the 2005 inventory was performed between June 16 and 19, and was undertaken by a team that included, Richard Aaron, Pat Burchell, Negin Ghanavatian, Brenda Gibson, Dr Nancy Ironside, Dr Vello Soots, Dr John Sparling (leader), Michael Warnock, and Tony and Marianna Wright.

The weather for the five days before the visit were characterized by heavy rainfall and slightly cooler than normal conditions. Prior to this there was an extended period of about a week of hot and dry weather during which time the alvar and alvar grasslands became parched and the vegetation quite browned. Little or no standing water was observed during this period, except for the wetlands and swamp forests. However during our visit, the alvar grasslands and some of the forest and grassland communities had standing water up to 30 cm deep.

Fungi were recorded from alvar and pavement alvar communities (A), alvar grasslands (G), shrub open savannah (S), and forest (F). Two days were spent at the Cameron property and one day at the Windmill Ranch.

The species found are provided in the following table. The arrangement of sections follows Lamoureux (Cercle des Mycologues de Montreal, Liste des Espèces Herborisees, 2004). A total of 47 species were found at the Cameron Ranch (C) and 32 at the Windmill Ranch (W), with a species total for both areas of 66. The species found in each alvar community were recorded, and specimens collected for microscopic examination and confirmation.

We thank Ron Reid for encouragement and assistance in many ways. We also thank Joan Rosebush for kind help and logistical support.
