CAIN FORAY COLLECTIONS OF FUNGI BY YEAR
This
year’s foray marks the 36th anniversary of the first Cain Foray. The Cain
Foray is now our annual weekend of mushrooming in the wilderness. It will be held
at the Tally-Ho Inn again, which is ideally suited for such an
adventure, located away from urban "civilization" on Lake Peninsula east
of Huntsville in the District of Muskoka. The Inn offers an excellent
selection of accommodations of one bedroom units, suites, cabins and cottages;
two and three bedroom cottages, where most of these bedrooms have private bathrooms. The
dining room offers good hearty homemade meals, incorporating vegetables grown
on their property. The
resort is surrounded by woods with walking trails that are suitable for
collecting mushrooms, and nearby are extensive forests that have more areas
for mushrooming. The Leslie Frost Centre is less than a half-hour drive away
for those who wish to revisit the trails of the very first Cain Foray.
The Cain Foray starts on Friday night, September 17th, with a wine and cheese reception in the main lodge where we can meet our fellow foragers and swap mushroom stories. Saturday morning, after a hearty breakfast, will be spent foraying, in groups of about a dozen or so, on various forest trails. After lunch there will be more forays and those who wish may sort and identify the mushrooms that were brought in from the morning forays. We will be guided and helped in this activity by our guest professional mycologists and some keen amateurs, who have both the knowledge and talent to put names to hundreds of diverse mushrooms. During the afternoon, we will also be able to sample some of the edible mushrooms that will have been prepared by our own expert chefs. Saturday evening will feature an illustrated mushroom talk and all mushrooms that were collected during the day will be displayed. Sunday morning will provide more opportunities to foray or to study the many specimens on display. Our weekend at the Inn ends September 19th after lunch.
The Vello Soots Memorial Cain Foray will be held at the Tally-Ho Inn Resort on beautiful Peninsula Lake, east of Huntsville.
Accommodation will be in spacious cottages, cabins, single units (motel units, rooms), or suites; two and three bedroom cottages of several configurations of living room, fireplace, kitchen or fridge, and bathrooms.
Meals will be taken in the charming Tally-Ho dining room.
Both professional and amateur mycologists will be there to assist in identifying fungi. Arrangements for their attendance have been finalized.
Our guest speaker, Dr David Malloch, will give his presentation on Saturday evening after dinner.
Mycologists who we also expect at the Cain Foray this year, besides Dr. David Malloch, are Dr. James Scott, Dr. Richard Summerbell and Walter Sturgeon from Ohio, who attends our Cain Forays. All will be sharing their knowledge and expertise in the identification of the many fungi we expect to be collected by participants at this event.
Henk van der Gaag, a member and past Librarian, will once again, as he had done for so many years at the Cain Foray, be setting up the tables with his classification signs for sorting of the various genera and species for identification of the collections. Henk has had an interest in Mycology for many decades which he brought with him when he emigrated to Canada from the Netherlands many years ago.
